Get ready this bank holiday with our handy top tips!
First up, we’re celebrating the King’s coronation
The birds are singing, the blossom buds are on the tree and this year, not one but three May bank holidays are upon us. As we head into the month, it's beginning to feel a lot like coronation time – and that can only mean one thing: we're getting ready to party. So gather your friends, family and your favourite neighbours and get ready to celebrate the event of the year.
If you’re stuck on how to keep everyone happy and entertained, fear not because we have a host of tips and creative ideas to keep things stress-free and fun. There are activities for all ages on all the bank holidays down below, so keep on scrolling.
It’s time to street party like it’s 2023

We love any excuse to hang out the bunting.
It’s time to get the neighbours together for a festive street party to celebrate the coronation of King Charles II. Success involves just a little careful planning and coordination, so if that’s not your strong point, delegate to a more organised member of your street.
Start by getting permission from your local authority and making sure you follow any guidelines they give you. Chat about how much you want to spend with your neighbours – it’s always good to make sure everyone’s on board with the expenses.
A street party means lots of bums on seats, so ask everyone to bring their garden furniture out front. And if you find you need more, we have lots of seating to suit all outdoor spaces. Our Santiago 8-Seater Outdoor Dining Set is comfy, stylish and looks beautiful in any garden. And you can easily move it from garden patio to street for bank holiday parties.
Drape a few fairy light strings across chair-backs and you have the makings of a glorious evening as the sun goes down.
Bunting – the perfect coronation decoration
Transform your outdoor space into a right royal retreat with bunting and decorations. Start by choosing a colour scheme. You could go traditional with red, white, and blue or something more adventurous. Balloons and streamers are budget friendly, and so are paper lanterns if you make them yourself.
Letting the kids get involved is a great way to keep them occupied. DIY projects like making paper flowers or painting flags and banners are perfect for all ages and it gives your space a personal touch.
With all this creativity going on, you’ll want to keep everything organised and easily accessible. Our City Storage Box is super roomy but compact enough for balconies or smaller outdoor spaces. It’s ideal for storing garden gadgets, gizmos, or in this case, crafting activities and your favourite decorations.
Flower crown workshop
Here’s an idea themed to the coronation (but doesn’t need to be) that will delight the kids. Why not add a touch of royalty to the day with a DIY flower crown workshop? Set up a crafting station on one of our fold-away tables and let your guests’ children create their own beautiful flower crowns to wear during the party. Store all the necessary supplies and accessories in the City Storage Box (or one of our many other storage boxes) for easy access and organisation.
For supplies, you could pick flowers from your garden or the gardens of friendly neighbours. Or if you’re feeling a bit more flush, you could buy from a local florist. Then all you need is some floral wire, floral tape, headbands and ribbon. Make sure you know how many people are coming to avoid any little ones going home empty-handed.
Finally, don’t forget to set up a mirror so people can see how regal they look and make sure you take plenty of photographs for you (and our) Instagram feed, #KeterSpaces.
Children’s storytelling session
Keep the children entertained with a captivating storytelling session, themed around fairy tale kings and queens for a coronation bank holiday (or any favourite stories for the second bank holiday – we like The Tiger that Came to Tea). Our California 3-Seater Chaise Longue Set has space for lots of little ones and creates the feel of a storytelling zone in your garden – and even better, it’s much more comfortable than sitting on a carpet.
If you’re going all out and have enough time to plan, you could even use a few props, costumes, puppets, or create a theme day where you ask children and parents to come dressed as their favourite characters.
Don’t forget to set up one of our small tables with age-appropriate snacks and drinks, so the kids can enjoy a treat while they listen to the stories. And keep a close eye on everyone to make sure no one wanders off and everyone has a safe, wonderful time.
Take your cool brews with you
If you’re not throwing a coronation party but you’ve been invited to one, you’re almost certainly taking a few drinks along. No one wants to arrive with warm beers in a carrier bag, but don’t worry – we’ve got you covered.
Our 16L Portable Cooler Table is a cooler, table and storage solution all in one. Neat and compact, its easy-to-carry design makes it ideal for taking along to events or your friend’s house. The cooler table's lid doubles as a handy table-top, perfect for placing your snacks and drinks while you mingle.
All you need to do is fill it with a few ice packs and your favourite drinks before you set off – the cooler’s insulated design will keep your drinks cold for hours
Be the alfresco host with the most
Thinking of throwing a smaller private party, just because? The type of event that calls for cold bubbles and cocktails? Our Patio Cooler and Beverage Cart is an elegant outdoor take on the classic cocktail trolley. We’ve designed it with wheels so you can easily share cold champagne and other delicious drinks with friends and guests. Pair it with our Unity XL BBQ Table for a designated drinks and snacks area – this table also works wonderfully well for buffets and cakes.
As the evening moves on, make sure everyone is feeling relaxed and comfortable – you might think about setting up a chill-out zone with space to recline. Keter’s California 3-seater Chaise Longue Set looks snug and cozy, especially beside a fire pit. Somewhere for you to hang out with your guests and put the world to rights
Make May Day and the spring bank holiday a stay-at-home success
It’s time to give staying at home the recognition it deserves. Not only is it the more wallet-friendly option, but it’s the best way to get the most out of your garden. Whether your idea of a good time involves clearing and planting, playing with the kids or relaxing with friends, we’ve got you covered. So, grab your sunglasses and sun cream (come on, British sunshine) and let’s get clearing, digging, planting, partying and keeping things nice and organised.
Tidy up and organise your outdoor space
If you were too focused on street parties and celebrating earlier in the month, here’s your second chance to be virtuous and clear away the last of winter. Dead leaves, mud, dead shrubbery and anything else that doesn’t belong in a beautiful garden.
It’s also a great time to update your garden equipment and tools, getting rid of anything rusty that won’t do the job. To make sure your tools go the distance, it’s a good idea to store them somewhere dry and safe. We have a range of weatherproof sheds for all sizes of garden.
A secret way to clear up toys
It’s a long weekend with no school on Monday. This means an extended playtime with all the extra mischief, joy, mess and clearing up. If your kids have lots of garden toys and you’re at a loss for where to store them without filling up your space, we have the perfect solution.
Our storage benches are designed to help you clear away clutter and store it secretly. They look good in any garden and are extra roomy inside with enough space for all your children’s toys and games.
We make them weather-resistant to keep your favourite things dry and well-ventilated. And even better, these benches are a lovely place to sit, unwind and have a nice cup of tea.
Prepare the perfect flower garden – pollinators welcome
Nothing says bank holiday bliss like a spot of gardening. Now’s your time to design and plant a beautiful flower garden with species that tempt bees and butterflies. Go online to find out what flowers work best for attracting these friendly bugs – you can even find starter packs filled with a variety of wildflower seeds.
Lavender, echinacea and cosmos give colour and fragrance all season long. But if you’re looking for something a little more refined, keep an eye on the Chelsea Flower Show for ideas – this also falls in May and features the very best of British gardens.
Once you’ve decided what to plant, you’ll need a container. Whether you live in a larger garden or keep a small but colourful balcony space, our Elevated Garden Beds work really well for all sorts of flowers, herbs or vegetables. They have a built-in water system and keep your prize plants out of the way of the wrong kind of creepy crawlies.
Open air garden cinema
Lots of people have projectors these days. If you happen to have one, you could use it to create an incredible outdoor cinema experience for family and friends. All you need is a white sheet hung between two trees or on a wall.
Simply arrange some outdoor seating, sofas, beanbags and blankets, then invite the gang around to yours and ask everyone to get comfy. We have a range of water-resistant outdoor seating that looks inviting, from our new California range that includes chaise longue and corner seating to our range of dining sets that allow you to eat while you soak in the atmosphere.
Just don’t forget the fairy lights, lanterns or solar-powered garden lights. And even more important – ask everyone to bring lots of snuggly blankets for when the sun goes down.
Wishing you a wonderful double bank holiday from all of us at Keter
