Declutter Your Life by Planning Ahead
We love spending as much time as we possibly can outdoors, especially when the sun’s shining. Whether that means relaxing on a sun lounger with a good book, entertaining friends around a barbecue or serving an al fresco dinner for the family, if summer's here then outdoors is where you’ll find us. So, why not give a gift to your future self and end your summer season with a declutter and reorganise that’ll make it super-easy to get back out there next year? Follow these simple steps and while your neighbours are fighting through the cobwebs in their overstuffed sheds to find the ‘good’ chairs, you’ll already have your feet up in the garden.
Keeping Things Simple
We all need that extra bit of clarity at times, and through decluttering our homes and gardens that clarity can be achieved. Follow these four simple steps to declutter your life.
1.Declutter your Life
To declutter your garden so it’s ready to enjoy next year, start by committing to letting go of any hoarding habits and being realistic about the space you have and what you’d like to achieve with it. Imagine the ideal garden you’d like to create. What are your priorities? Composting? Growing veg? How might they work in the space you have? Make a plan and stick to it.
2. If in doubt, chuck it out
One core step towards decluttering your life is understanding what you can keep and what really needs to go.
Have you got lots of things you’re storing ‘just in case’ that you no longer use? A broken chair that you might fix one day? Your old barbecue, in case the new one suddenly gives up the ghost? Plant pots you don’t need and no longer use? Outdoor toys and games the kids have long grown out of? It’s time to get rid. Rehome unwanted items (even broken ones!) via Facebook Marketplace and Freecycle to give them a new lease of life.
3. Store chronologically
Think ahead to the first things you’ll want to do when the sun breaks through the clouds next summer. Then store things away with the stuff you’ll want to grab first in the easiest-to-reach spots. If you’ve got a shed, put your outdoor chairs, tables and loungers nearest to the door. You might also want to give your garden furniture, paving and decking a good wash when the season starts, so consider putting your jet wash in a grabbable location, too.
4. Arrange items by category
Keep like with like, so you can find everything you need quickly and easily. One garden hack we love is to store all our outdoor soft furnishings together – seat pads, blankets for when it gets cooler in the evenings, sofa cushions – all these can go in a storage trunk during the winter months. And remember, if you’re umming and ahhing about whether you really need to keep that parasol that Auntie Beryl gave you, simply ask yourself: ‘Does it spark joy?’
We've got your back
Following the above steps it should be easy to spark joy and declutter your life for the long run.
