Top 5 Things To Know When Buying A Shed

A shed can seem to be a complicated purchase. Metal, wood or resin? Where to put it? How to build a base? Have a look at our top 5 tips on buying a shed, which will make the whole process a lot simpler.

1. Decide on the shape and size you need first

It’s always best to give yourself more space than you think you need. Measure your space carefully and don’t forget to include the overhang of the shed roof in your measurements. If it’s just to store the kids' bikes, then a Keter Store-It-Out Prime may be just what you need.

There are horizontal and vertical sheds, standalone buildings and pretty much every size and shape of shed imaginable. Some outdoor sheds make it easy to add shed accessories, such as shelves, which can dramatically increase storage space.

2. Which material?

What’s the right material for you? Wood always looks nice but requires regular maintenance and can be susceptible to rotting. Metal sheds are strong but aren’t pretty and can be hard to erect. Resin sheds are maintenance-free, easy to put up and stay looking great season after season.

3. What are the features you really need?

Do you need a shed with a lipped threshold to roll things in and out easily?

Do the doors open wide enough?

Ventilation to prevent mildew and moisture build-up?

Light is essential in a shed — look for decent windows and/or a skylight.

Security is key if you’re going to store anything of value — does your storage shed have a lockable and secure latch?

4. Think about the color and style

Neutral colors are usually the way to go when it comes to backyard storage. You don’t want something sticking out too much and ruining the aesthetics of your yard. When considering what colors, think of matching the earthy tones of your backyard or the tones of your patio furniture.

5. Plan the installation carefully

Make sure you have a level base for your shed to sit on. If it’s sloping, then the shed won’t fit correctly and gaps will appear that can let in rain. Assembling a shed is at least a two- or three-person job, depending on its size.

And here’s one extra tip — check the warranty information so you can buy with confidence. Keter sheds come with warranties from 5 years to lifetime guarantees!
